Patient Blood Management Guidelines

The National Blood Authority (NBA) has funded and managed the development of a series of evidence-based Patient Blood Management (PBM) Guidelines, comprising six modules. The PBM Guidelines reflect a systematic review of the scientific literature and clinical expert consensus.

The NBA has commenced a review of the PBM Guidelines. The review is being undertaken across the suite of modules. The original modules remain available to guide practice.

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 1 Critical Bleeding/Massive Transfusion

Module 1 is intended to assist and guide health-care professionals in making clinical decisions when managing patients with critical bleeding who require or are likely to require massive transfusion.

Module 1 includes a Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) template that is designed to be adapted to meet local institutions’ patient population and resources.

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 2 Perioperative

Module 2 is intended to inform health-care practitioners, health educators, health service managers and policy makers about the pre, intra and postoperative care of patients undergoing surgery or invasive procedures, particularly those in which blood loss is anticipated.

Module 2 includes an adaptable Preoperative Haemoglobin Assessment and Optimisation template. The template is for patients undergoing procedures in which substantial blood loss is anticipated such as cardiac surgery, major orthopaedic, vascular and general surgery.

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 3 Medical

Module 3 is intended to assist and guide clinical decisions and coordination of health-care across the primary, secondary and tertiary care setting for patients with acute or chronic medical conditions requiring haematological intervention.

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 4 Critical Care

Module 4 is intended to assist and guide health-care professionals in making clinical decisions when managing patients requiring critical care.

Module 4 Quick Reference Guide includes a Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) template that is designed to be adapted to meet local institutions’ patient population and resources.

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 5 Obstetrics and Maternity

Module 5 is intended to assist and guide health-care professionals in making clinical decisions when managing pregnant and postpartum women.

Module 5 introduces expert opinion points (EOPs), to complement the recommendations and practice points. EOPs were developed by the Clinical/Consumer Reference Group where relevant guidance, outside of the scope of the systematic review, was required. The module includes EOPs on anaemia, transfusion support, adapting or modifying a massive transfusion protocol, and care of patients in whom a transfusion is not an option.

Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 6 Neonatal and Paediatrics

Module 6 is intended to assist and guide health-care professionals in making clinical decisions about blood management in neonatal and paediatric patients.

Module 6 includes six appendixes that provide guidance on dosing, assessment and optimisation of various products and situations in the neonatal and paediatric population. The Haemoglobin Assessment and Optimisation template (Appendix H) and the Critical Bleeding Protocol (Appendix K) are designed to be adapted to meet the needs of local institutions’ protocols, policies and procedures.
